RSI (Repetitive
Strain)
RSI, or Repetitive Strain
Injury, covers a large family of complaints in which the common cause is over-use of a tool or activity with
repeated identical movements. RSI symptoms typically affect muscles, tendons and nerves in the hands, arms and
upper back, with recurring pain, tingling or numbness, and loss of strength and
endurance.
A September 2005 study by the Chartered
Society of Physiotherapy found that 448,000 U.K. workers were reported to have RSI in the previous year, with the
numbers, and the costs to employers and employees, rising steadily.
Common conditions within the RSI family
are tendonitis, bursitis, tennis elbow, golfer's knee, typist's wrist, jogger's
ankle, and, more recently, "Gamer's Thumb" and
"Blackberry Thumb".
However, RSI is most concentrated in
certain types of work, particularly computer workers (which means most of us are at risk at some point, but
especially journalists and other writers), supermarket check-out assistants, assembly line workers and professional
musicians.
Scenar can
be wonderful in relieving the pain and inflammation of RSI, especially when combined with resting the affected
areas as much as possible initially, then using regular stretching exercises and ergonomic
measures.
A course of Scenar treatment should also
help in relaxing severely stressed muscles, which have been identified as a key factor in RSI's development -- RSI
can appear after only a short period of over-use if the person is very stressed.
The aim is obviously to treat your RSI
before it becomes so debilitating that surgery is offered as the only option. If you do go for surgery, however,
then Scenar can at least help in accelerating your rehabilitation afterwards.
Please note that these pages are for general information and not in any way intended to
help you diagnose a medical condition. You should first seek a diagnosis from a doctor, and, if you decide to
try Scenar therapy, work with your doctor in assessing the progress of the condition and the dosage of any
drugs you may be taking.
